With the successful M6 Tebay Services already established since the 1970’s, the Cumbrian-based owners, Westmorland Ltd, were approached to develop a new motorway service station on the M5 in Gloucestershire. The services included HGV parking, a 24hr petrol station, car park, farm shop and café.
David Tucker Associates were appointed to deal with the Highways Authority and Gloucestershire County Council to gain agreement access arrangements. The team also produced the preliminary layouts for the car parking services, HGV parking and petrol station. The project stands out as the first privately promoted Motorway Service Area (MSA) to obtain planning consent without going to a public inquiry.
Following the success of the Gloucestershire Services project, DTA have been working with Welcome Break to address access difficulties at their existing MSAs at Coventry and Birchanger and have also been appointed by Extra to produce a travel plan, site layout, access arrangements and transport assessment for their new facilities at Junction 35 of the M1.
